Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Radiological Report: Cardiac size within normal limits. Both lungs show severe overinflation typical of COPD. No sign of mass or consolidation.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an 'umbrella' term for people with chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. With COPD the airflow to the lungs is restricted (obstructed). COPD is usually caused by smoking. Symptoms include cough and breathlessness.

Emhysema

Hyperinflation secondary to emphysema

Bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis cannot be diagnosed radiologically. Although findings such as increased lung markings or tubular opacities, bronchial wall cuffing (thickening) can be seen with bronchitis, they are nonspecific. The main reason for getting a chest X-ray is to exclude other conditions, such as bronchiectasis, which can mimic the disease clinically.
